Full of fun and magical treasures, it is a popular and eagerly anticipated event, and a centre-piece of the Saltaire Arts Trail. From delicate jewellery and vintage textiles to porridge spurtles and hand-made journals, the Makers’ Fair welcomes you with the finest examples of hand-made crafts.

7 businesses were present at the Bardford Enterprise Academy stalls over the four days and all proved a hit with shoppers in the city centre with Saturday and Sunday being extremely busy.

Expressions by Abeyy, 2Style, Dilly’s Confectionary, Julie’s Beauty and Face painting with Nicola all took part in the event to showcase their business offering everything from home-made shortbread biscuits to eyebrow threading.

In September 2009, Bradford College in association with Bradford Kickstart launched a new project Bradford Enterprise Academy. The academy delivers inspirational and exciting enterprise programmes to all college students. The aim of the academy is to stimulate high interest in enterprise, enhance the entrepreneurial skills of the students and increase the opportunities of new start up business and self employment.

Bradford Enterprise Academy is offering enterprise training for all curriculum areas throughout college to equip students with the knowledge, skills, confidence and expertise to start their own business or self employment. Since September 2009, 210 Bradford College students successfully completed the new enterprise programme. To celebrate the success the Bradford Enterprise Academy has organised the Enterprise Award Ceremony on Monday 28^th June. During the ceremony, students were awarded the NCFE Award in Developing Business Enterprise Certificates by Michele Sutton, OBE Principal and Chief Executive of Bradford College.

During the ceremony Bradford Enterprise Academy presented Certificates of Achievement to those Bradford College students who have displayed outstanding performance and dedication in enterprise this academic year. Just some of the students included Winners of Best Business Idea Competition (November 2009) Paul Garside, Paul Fisher and Phillip Faulkner with their idea of developing student support tools website or Faisal Rehman, Zaffar Ul Haq and Akhlaq Ahmed who with some of their co students set up and run the Tech World, the very successful IT helpdesk between March and May 2010.

Special thanks were extended to all programme managers and enterprise champions without whom the programme would have not been possible.

 Three members of staff including Elvir Kesedzic (HE Computing), Val Berwin (Beauty Therapy) and Suzanne Griffith (Photography) also received an award for their outstanding contribution to enterprise during the academic year.

 Throughout the event, the BEA team as well as organisations such as Princes Trust and Access to Fund were on hand for students to explore the possibilities of business developments and funding opportunities.

Rap Artist Rahul Sabbarwal, known in the music industry as Master RS is continuing to push barriers for the community and music scene within West Yorkshire. On Friday 4^th June not only will Rahul be fundraising for Bradford Nightstop but he will also be raising funds to shoot a community music video entitled ‘I’m A Warrior’ which is about people overcoming obstacles in their life. In turn this music video will help to keep people away from crime, drugs and alcohol. During the event, two young local rappers will have a chance to perform and showcase their talents!

The event is going to be headlined by Bassline industry DJ legends such as Slick Don, Nasteeboi, Mikey B and DJ Killa who are travelling to support Rahul and the event from across the country (Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Leeds and Telford). The event will also feature upcoming rap talents such as Youtie, Re-load, Aleysha Bower, Duane Simons and many other names.

Since January 2010, when Rahul won Bradford Enterprise’s Best Idea Award with his record label Money Running Slumdog Records (M.R.S. Records), he has been busy looking for funding opportunities to run music workshops in order to provide people of Yorkshire with the same opportunities young musicians find in London area.

Just recently, Rahul’s single ‘I Got To’ got to number 6 on Sky Digitial TV Channel AKA Chart’s. Within the last couple of months, Rahul has been featured in the Telegraph and Argus & Asian Express about his music and positive actions for the community. He has been also listed as an ‘inspirational leader’’ and ‘ambassador’ for the B Someone, the new Bradford Council initiative supporting and inspiring young people of Bradford.

Rahul has released two singles ‘Superstar’ and ‘I’m A Warrior’ which have had huge response on social network sites, which led to Rahul`s and his manager Robert Moore`s decision to hold a fundraiser in order to do a community music video.

When asked Rahul why he chose the Bradford Nightstop, he commented: “One of my close friends Marcus died on a street as he didn’t have nowhere to turn to. I walk around Bradford and see a lot of homeless people and so I want to donate something to a charity that REALLY uses the money to help people. I hope by raising funds for them I can make sure people don’t die or suffer neglect like my friend Marcus did in Nottingham. Also by using the remaining 5% of the event earnings for my music video I can finally do what I want and hopefully keep people away from crime, as the rate of crime and fraud in Bradford is staggering. I strongly believe that by running music workshops I can help to tackle the crime issues at least a little bit and so, make a difference.”

We were delighted to have organised our third event that was dedicated to Health and Care on 30^th March 2010 from 11:30am to 3:30 pm at the Bradford College’s School of Teaching, Health and Care, the McMillan Building (Trinity Road, BD5 0JE). The event was open to everyone and the day was packed with presentations, entertainment, business exhibits, and hands on workshops. 

Business exhibition was open to everybody for the duration of the event. People from communities, schools and colleges from Bradford and Leeds as well as businesses and organisations from Bradford and area attended the event. During the event, representatives from different organisations were be available to offer information on self employment, starting up a business, skill and training opportunities. There were pletny of opportunities to speak to individuals from different types of businesses about their early days and benefit from various types of seminars and hands-on workshops.

The event was carried in a relax athmosphere and everybody had a good time. For some pictures from the event, please see the gallery.

As their contribution to the College’s campaign to support our local Marie Curie hospice in Bradford, students from our National Diploma in Photography programme have taken the colour yellow as their inspiration to take a range of photographs to sell on behalf of this most worthwhile charity.

Their Course Tutor, Suzie Griffiths explained, “Our students are aged from sixteen plus and are already taking fantastic photographs. Rather than just hold the usual parents’ evening at this time of the year, we decided to have a family and friends evening, celebrating them as students and showcasing their talents. As many of these young people will progress to the HND Photography course it seemed a good idea to give them a taster of putting on a show in aid of Marie Curie.”

The students they transformed two walls of the Yorkshire Craft Centre’s café bar with their photographs showing a considerable flair and a diverse range of subjects. They sold prints at the family and friends event and will continue to do so until 19th April 2010.

Suzie continued, “I am so proud of the students. They have really taken on board some the diversity of the colour. The students have designed everything from posters to payment cards. They have received outstanding technical support from Pete Maggs throughout the project. Bradford Enterprise Academy sponsored the printing, paying for photography paper and mounts. They also supplied a printer and donated a prize of a £30 voucher for the best picture, which was awarded to Andrew McCulloch. We did a roaring trade on the night and we will continue to print photographs as people want them, so I hope that lots of people will buy them so we can raise as much money as possible for Marie Curie.”

The photographs have been much admired and will remain on display in the YCC café bar until Easter. Prints are for sale at the incredible price of only £2.50 for A4 size and £5 for A3, and 100 % of the sale price goes to the charity. Ross Miller

Bradford Enterprise Academy hosted a Hair Styling Show on Thursday 4^th March. Ross Miller, an artistic and a training director of renowned Renella Hairdressing Salon, also member of Habia Skill Team came to do a live cutting demonstration for Bradford College students, but also to talk about his beginnings.  

Ross has 20 years of experience within the hairdressing industry, working for a family hairdressing salon of 41 years in Scotland. He didn’t always want to become a hairdresser. His dream was to study architecture, but when he found out it would take seven years of university studies, he decided against it. He had a chat with his mum and dad and decided to join the family business. And he never regretted his decision.

Ross’s family owns three salons, employing 40 hairdressers, 12 apprentices and five members of administrative team. For Ross, the customer service within the salon plays the biggest role, sometimes more important than the cutting experience. As he says: “Hairdressing industry is a Happy Industry. Customers leave with smiles on their faces.” But it is also a hard working industry as hairdressers work long hours, on their feet most of the time.

“Hairdressing is a big industry that keeps growing as people always need a change. Therefore it is important for a hairdresser to understand what customers need and want. You should try to visualise what you trying to achieve, always thinking of simple steps. It is also important how you position your hands, they are after all your most important tools and the right positioning whilst cutting can prolong hairdresser’s life,” commented Ross.

When asking Ross about his experience as a student, he pointed out the variety of courses and training available to all students nowadays. During his students years, they had much theory to go through that was not encouraging.

Ross realised the need for training whilst working at the family salon. Some years back, Renella Hairdressing salon was the only salon in Scotland that offered hair extensions. After eight years of delivering this service, it was inevitable to train members of other salons to relieve Renella of the pressure. Ross discovered the need for ongoing training of their members of staff and got involved with Habia.

Habia is the standard setting body for the hair, beauty, nails and spa industries, and creates the standards that form the basis of all qualifications including NVQs, SVQs, Apprenticeships, Diplomas and Foundation degrees, as well as industry codes of practice. Nowadays, Habia is an international organisation working with different countries that aim to set and adopt UK standards within Hairdressing and beauty industries.

For any hairdresser, it is great opportunity to become part of Habia team. Ross has recently been to Japan and Kuwait, teaching students and photo shooting in Italy as part of the Habia skill team. Ross enjoys his work very much, always looking forward to the future: “Who knows what will next year bring. But as long as you enjoy what you doing, you have something to look forward to.”

My Story: The Audience and Presentation by Amjad Bashir

Bradford Enterprise Academy was delighted to host an audience and presentation by Amjad Bashir, the owner of the award winning Zouk Tea Bar and Restaurant.

 On 8th March 2010 Amjad Bashir came to Bradford College to talk to our students about his business and how he became one of the best entrepreneurs in Bradford.

Since his young age he has been surrounded by enterprise as his parents owned one of the first fabric shops in the area. After school, Amjad went on to study chemical engineering, but he left the course as he didn’t like it and so he joined the family business.

“When you fall down, you don’t stop, you learn from your own mistakes and became better individual” commented Amjad during his presentation

After one trip to Pakistan, he came back with many ideas and one of them was to open a restaurant. Whilst doing his market research, he notices British people love of Indian food, but also their presumption of low hygiene in Indian kitchen. And so he decided to open a restaurant with open kitchen and big windows, creating clean and airy atmosphere. “When you see an opportunity, don’t wait, time will not wait for you. Cease the opportunity!” commented Amjad. And so he did, the restaurant was a big success and Amjad started making big money, in fact so much that he gave his father £50,000 in cash to buy a house back in 1980.  

Nowadays, Amjad`s children joined the family business even though he did try to discourage them as it is a hard job, working 24/7. They are working on few new projects, recently opened a new restaurant in Manchester and would like to open a franchise in Italy.
